2-day training program on Punjab ECBC kicks off at CT

  • Punjab to implement Energy Code: PEDA Officials
  • Need to design climate-responsive buildings discussed
Jalandhar 26 February (Jaswinder Azad)- A two-day intensive training programme on Punjab Energy Conservation Building Code Simulation has kicked off at CT Institute of Architecture and Planning. Dr. GS Kalra, Campus Director, CT Group of Institutions, Shahpur gave the welcome address.  Ar. Surinder Bahga, Member of Advisory Committee to Union Ministry of Home was the Chief Guest.
50 professionals consisting of architects, engineers, builders, developers and officers of Urban Local Bodies and various other government departments besides some students of architecture attended the training program.
In total, 37 such training programs are going to be organized in the state of Punjab in year 2018.  These workshops are supported by United Nations Development Programme, Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Punjab Energy Development Agency and Global Environment Fund.
Punjab Government had constituted committee of officials of Department of Architecture, Public Works Department, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited, Housing & Urban Development and PEDA to amend Energy Conservation Building Code prepared by Union Government.  The work was assigned to Architects Surinder Bahga and Archana Chaudhary of Indian Institute of Architects.  They authored the new code after many meetings with the technical committee.  Randhir Singh (Sr. Manger PEDA) stressed on the need of conservation of water in Punjab. He appealed to plant at least one tree in Punjab.
Ar. Surinder Bahga delivered a talk on salient features of Punjab Energy Conservation Building Code.  He said, “Code will be applicable with conditioned floor area of 500 square metre or more.  Any event having three or more day’s duration have to comply with this code.  It will also be applicable on additions, alterations to existing buildings.  It will be mandatory to use minimum three star rated equipments in buildings”.
Master Trainer of BEE, Mr. Akshay Kumar Gupta deliberated on ways to save energy consumption in heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, lighting, and pumping, etc.  He emphasized the need to design climate-responsive buildings.
Officials of PEDA spoke on work being carried by PEDA in the state to promote energy conservation. They said that PEDA is aiming to implement this code in next six months and is planning to train architects, engineers, builders, planners and officers of urban local bodies through this initiative.  Punjab is now among the 10 states of India which have prepared this code and going to implement it soon.
Mr. Kanagraj Ganeshan, another energy expert will address the gathering tomorrow.  He will speak on the importance and relevance of this code for Punjab state.
Mr. Manbir Singh, Managing Director, CT Group of Institutions lauded the efforts of Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) for promoting the cause of saving energy consumption in buildings.
