She also conveyed a special thanks to DST for giving them the honour of organizing this camp adding that the camp would inculcate research aptitude among the students.
Sh. Varinder Kumar congratulated the students for their brilliance and performance in the matriculation results. He further motivated them to gain new heights in the field of science and technology. He said that language is no bar to gain knowledge and they can become successful by gaining information in any language. Sh. Arvind Ghai also welcomed and congratulated the students for their success. The Coordinator of the camp Dr. Jitender acquainted the students with the schedule of the camp and urged them to pursue career in science.
In his keynote address, Dr. Pawan Kumar, Deptt. of Chemistry, Kurukshetra University addressed the students on the theme ‘Learning to spin the wheel of science’. He said that the motive of science is not only to provide knowledge but also to provide it in an organized and systematic manner. He told that the wheel of science spin around three phases which are explain, investigate and analyse. He explained the concept by talking about the disease of AIDS which has spread widely in Punjab.
The second session was conducted by Dr. Ashish Arora, HOD Mathematics, Punjab Technical University and he explained the concepts like analytical theory, elliptic function, fractions, infinite series etc. with special reference to the contribution of Ramanujan, a great mathematician. The third session was addressed by Dr. Kunwar Rajeev, DAV Jalandhar who is also a holder of Guinness Book of World Record. He gave practical tips on mind and memory skills.
The second day of 5th Inspire Internship Science Camp witnessed the presence of eminent guests Dr. G.S. Sodhi, Associate Prof. Deptt. of Chemistry and Forensic Science at Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College, Delhi and Dr. Atul Khanna, Prof. Deptt. of Physics GNDU Amritsar. Principal Prof. Dr. (Mrs.) Ajay Sareen welcomed the guests.
Dr. G.S. Sodhi is amongst a handful of forensic scientist in the world and the only one in India working on developing chemical methods of detecting finger prints at crime scene. He spoke on the topic ‘Forensic chemistry, an aid to combat crime’. He told the students about the various methods adopted by forensic scientist for investigation of crime using soil bank, facial reconstruction and finger printing in particular. He told that our finger print have about 80-85 characters and no two finger prints can be similar in the world. He discussed various methods of finger printing like powder technique, Ninhydrin technique, composites based on nanoparticles, fluorescent dye (crystal violet), spray formulation (rose Bengal, t-tetra butyl ammonium iodide). He also discussed the methods to trace finger prints on lamination sheets, adhesive tape, CD, duct tapes etc. and the methods for detection of weapon holder which is very useful to distinguish between homicide and suicide. Dr. Jitender, Mr. Harpreet Singh, Dr. Meena Sharma, Dr. Seema Marwaha honoured the guest with a planter and shawl.
In the second session Mr. Atul Khanna interacted with the students on the topic ‘Indian Space, nuclear and defence programmes: challenging career opportunities for science graduates’. He told the students that after world war II only united states and soviet union had powerful space programme; but today India runs and maintains its own space programme and remarkable benefits are being provided to the common man in timely and cost effective fashion. India launched its first satellite using technology imported from Russia, but now India has designed its own launch vehicle like SLV, ASLV PSLV, GSLV, GSLV MKII. The Indian launch vehicle PSLV-C-9 carried 10 rockets of different countries into space. He also discussed the structure of GSLV, liquid fuel rockets solid fuel rocket, ISRO Cryogenic engine. He threw light on Chandrayaan mission and Mars orbital Mission Mangalyaan. He also informed the students about development of India in field of Nuclear energy like Nuclear power plants, Nuclear Submarines etc. He made students aware of various career opportunities in the field of space, nuclear programmes and defence programmes like ISRO, DRDO and how to go for them. Dr. Jitender, Mr. Harpreet Singh, Dr. Meena Sharma, Dr. Seema Marwaha honoured the guest with a planter, memento and shawl. Post lunch parallel practical sessions were conducted in the laboratories. On this occasion, Dr. Neelam Sharma, Incharge and other faculty members of science were present.
