Jalandhar 16 November (Jaswinder Azad)- National Press Day was celebrated in the Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Guru Nanak Dev University Regional Campus here today. A seminar was organized by the department on the occasion in collaboration with the Punjab and Chandigarh Journalist Union.
The main speakers in the Seminar were Balbir Singh Jhandu, , Former News Editor Punjabi Tribune, Balwinder Singh Jammu, President Punjab and Chandigarh Journalist Union , Pritam Singh Rupal, General Secretary, Punjab and Chandigarh Journalist Union, I.P. Singh from Times of India, Charanjit Singh Bhullar from Punjabi Tribune, Satnam Singh Chanana, Veteran Journalist, Deepak Sharma, Parvasi Punjabi Radio, Khushaal Lally, Assistant Editor, Punjabi Jagran.
Inaugurating the Seminar, Dr. Kamlesh Singh Duggal welcomed the guests and talked about the significance of the day. He discussed the concept of paid news and the ethics of journalism. Pritam Singh Rupal touched on issues like the gagging of media, rise of language newspapers and the corporatization of media. He said many negative traits have emerged in media and social media many times acted very irresponsibly. Also there was groupism among journalists which affected the image and credibility of media among readers.
I.P Singh was of the view that one should be objective in reporting in controversial situations. He said that media can survive only through honesty and truthfulness and a true journalist should be well informed and opinionated.
