National Seminar on Information & Network Security: Need, Dimensions & Tactics at KMV

Jalandhar 5 November (Jaswinder Azad)- Kanya Maha Vidyalaya-The Heritage Institution, Jalandhar arranging for exchange of expert opinions on topics of imperative social and academic relevance is a constant pursuit.  Recently, in sync with this ideology the PG Dept. of Computer Science & Applications at KMV organized a one-day UGC Sponsored National Seminar on Information and Network Security: Need, Dimensions & Tactics.  After the ritual chanting of Holy Hyms and lighting of the symbolic lamp of knowledge all the important guests and dignitaries were accorded a warm floral welcome.  Principal Prof. Atima Sharma Dwivedi delivered the inaugural address, she thanked all the guests and participants for having giving such an amazingly enthusiastic and warm response to the call for the seminar. She specially acknowledge the important contribution that the keynote address and major talks for the day were going to make towards the success of the seminar.  She also observed that cyber-crime was fast becoming the major mode of criminal activity.  With the rapid global penetration of the Internet and Smart phone, the resulting productivity and social gains alongwith the increasing dependence on it criminals, epics and predators of all kinds had learnt to exploit this landscape much quicker than its defenders.  So the complex issue of cyber security needed to be tackled firmly to improve the security and stability of cyber space.  She concluded by wishing everybody a very fruitful and invigoratingly interactive day ahead.  The seminar was attended by 40 delegates & 200 students.  The keynote address was delivered by Dr.Mayank Dave, Prof. NIT Kurukshehtra. Dr. Dave made the audience aware about various concepts as thetried of information security, the various attacks related to it and consequence of malware.
The session concluded with the expert remarks of Dr. Maninder Singh Associate Professor & Head, Thapar University, Patiala.  The post tea-session comprised of talks by Dr.Maninder Singh, Associate Professor & Head, Thapar University, Patiala and Mr. Lovejot Singh Chhabra, CEO Cyber Defence Intelligence, Mohali, Punjab. 
Dr.Mayank Dave spoke on ‘Trends in System and Network Security’ while Dr.Maninder Singh, Associate Professor & Head, Thapar University, Patiala spoke on client site attacks.  Dr.Maninder Singh in a highly interactive manner elaborated on how to authenticate any website while brushing on the basics he addressed many vital issues like domain names, IP addresses, DNS poisoning and various other commands.  He practically demonstrated digital certificates of financial websites and explained how to view such information. Mr. Lovejot Singh Chhabra, an expert in data security and head of a company for cyber security clearly explained the in depth implications of cyber security.  According to him lack of awareness in the front and users had led to high rate of cyber attacks, therefore it was very necessary to read all terms and conditions before installing software.  He focussed on various dimensions and career prospects in information security.
The post lunch session constituted of a various paper presentation at dual sessions chaired by Dr.Gurvinder Singh, Dean Faculty of Engineering GNDU, Amritsar and Mr.Lovejot Singh CEO, Cyber Defence Intelligence Mohali, Punjab.  The Valedictory Function began with the report on the days event by the organising secretary Ms. Gurline Kaur after which the Guest of honour Dr. Gurvinder Singh addressed all present on the occasion.  After distribution of certificates to all present an excellent presentation of fusion of Giddha & Bhangra regaled all who had a long day and needed to sit back and relax.  The convenor of the seminar Mrs. Suman Khurana, Head PG Department of Computer Science & Applications extended a vote of thanks to one and all.
