Visit of BSc. Medical Students to CPRS, Jalandhar

Jalandhar 23 January (Jaswinder Azad)- A local visit of students to Central Potato Research Station, Jalandhar (CPRS) was organized by Department of Botany, DAV College, Jalandhar under the aegis of Kashyap Biological Society on January 17, 2017. CPRS is one of the seven regional research stations of the Central Potato Research Institute, Shimla (Himachal Pradesh). It was established in 1957 in Village Badshahpur. The station is well equipped with all modern facilities to provide disease free potato breeders seed all over India. 41 students of BSc Medical II and III visited this research station and explored the ongoing research on Solanum tuberosum (Potato). Sh Akhilesh Singh, Sr. Technical Officer showed different lab facilities associated with detection of disease free germplasm such as ELISA and in vitro regenerated potato seedlings. He also gave a brief introduction on Aeroponics (Soil less cultivation) and showed aeroponic chambers loaded with potato crop and the harvesting procedure in detail. Now days, aeroponic technique is getting proved as a revolution in every other aspect of crop cultivation in India and abroad.
Students and staff members also visited potato fields where crop harvesting technique related to different varieties cultivated in CPRS were explained by Dr. JS Minhas, Director, CPRS and Sh. Kapil Kumar, ACTO. In the end, Sh. Yogesh Kumar Gupta, Sr. Technical Officer shared their recent technique developed to make dehydrated potato cubes and shreads through an extension lecture. He emphasized on developing motive and spirit of learning in students which can help them develop scientific temperament and set goal in their lives.
In the end, Dr. Komal Arora, Head, Dept. of Botany thanked Dr. Minhas (Head, CPRS) and other staff members for their extended support to fulfill this visit. She also thanked Dr. S.K. Arora, Principal, DAV College for encouraging such departmental visits for better research exposure to students. Dr. Komal emphasized that students should participate in such visits since these cover the lag between classroom teaching and real research. It helps students in learning recent research techniques. Such excursions can fulfill dual purpose of inculcating scientific thinking and entrepreneurship side by side. Dr. Baljeet Kaur, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Botany also accompanied students for this visit.
