Jalandhar 20 May (Jaswinder Azad)- Kanya Maha Vidyalaya- the heritage institution, Jalandhar’s Principal Prof. Atima Sharma Dwivedi’s Research Paper “Bridging the gap between rural and urban students through innovative programmes: A case study of K.M.V” was selected and published by Niti Ayog supported by Govt. of India. In the paper Prof. Sharma had apprised the readers regarding the various innovative programmes introduced and initiated at KMV to bridge the gap between rural and urban students. It is often seen and experienced that rural students or those coming from under priviledged urban families lack confidence, psychological strength and suffer from social limitations. It is important for educational institutions to help develop self esteem and level out the difference often found in their skills and personalities. Case study of students after undergoing such innovative programmes has been undertaken to show that these programmes have led to the objective to bring about equality and leading to success of students. Foundation Programme new entrants to college is an innovative programmes designed by Prof. Atima Sharma Dwivedi which aims to build strong intellectual base of students and give them requisites exposure. Some of the innovative programme being Foundation Programme, School for Personality Development, School of Communication, School of Competitive Exams. KMV Foundation Course Programme the first of its kind to be offered by any college in the whole of India is modelled to bridge the very conspicuous and gaping gap between rural and urban students. It strengthens their intellectual foundation by providing them a wide view of world issues, human intellectual history, making of modern India and other important areas of knowledge so that they can carry forward the rich legacy of humanity as responsible & global citizens. School of Communications comes in very handy for the rual students to enhance ther communication Skills, a field in which they are lagging behind. The rural as well as urban students stand to gain a lot from short term proficiency certificate courses in French, Chinese, German, Spanish etc. taught by the native teachers. Spoken English classes help all students, particularly those from the rural backgrounds to gain proficiency in English. Personality Development course also aims at the holistic development of all the students and plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between students coming from various backgrounds. Prof. Atima Sharma averred that the paper deals with a very pertinent topic as in educational scenario a wide rift between the rural and urban students is always encountered. If we want our students to gain the utmost from education we must first bridge this gap. Many other innovative programmes like Moral Education Programme being run at KMV helps the students tread the path of righteousness and sensitizes the students and makes them humble and good. Centre for Competitive Exams at KMV runs training classes for clearing Bank PO Exams, UGC/Net, UPSE Exams etc. Thus all these innovative initiatives have resulted in laugible and intangible improvement as far as the rural urban divide in students is concerned which is indeed a colossal service to the education scenario here in Punjab.
