Jalandhar 6 March (Jaswinder Azad)- National Science Day Celebrations were organized by Department of Applied Sciences to commemorate the life of Sir C.V Raman who is credited with the discovery of Raman Effect here at DAVIET. The basic aim of celebrations was to give exposure to students about the latest discoveries in the field of science and to give them a platform to appreciate the great discovery by Indian physicist Sir Chandrashekhara Venkata Raman on 28 February 1928. The celebrations are supported by National Council for Science & Technology Communication( NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology( DST), Government of India and Punjab State Council for Science & Technology ( PSCST)
Dr. Kanchan Singh, Head Department of Applied Sciences welcomed the students and teachers on National Science Day celebrations. She highlighted that the Department is committed to provide the necessary exposure to first year students so that they can become able technocrats and managers. While giving the details of the events she shared that there will be technical quiz, elocution and poster making through which the students will showcase their passion for science and technology.
An expert talk by Dr. OP Pandey, Senior Professor, School of Physics and Material Sciences and Dean Research and Sponsorship Projects, Thapar University Patiala was organized on the topic “ Current Need of Energy and its Possible Solutions Through Catalytic Process with the aim to help the students gain valuable insights about how development can be achieved without destroying nature. He touched upon nanoscale processes and fabrication and highlighted the Top Down and the Bottom up Approach for the production of Nano Materials. He also talk discussed about the fact that sustainable development is the need of the hour. He clarified that sustainable development means meeting human development goals while at the same time sustaining the ability of natural systems to provide the natural resources and ecosystem services upon which the economy and society depend. He urged upon all present to give their bit by becoming environment friendly so that the planet can be saved for future generations.
Dr. Manoj Kumar, Principal DAVIET stated that we should remember the great Physicist Sir Chandrashekhara Venkata Raman who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for his work in the field of Light Scattering . He shared that the theme of National Science Day, 2018 is “Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future” and highlighted that it is time when benefits of science and technology should reach every individual so that no one should be left out of the phenomenal growth story of India. He urged upon the students to be innovative while dealing with their assignments and projects so as to break newer grounds in their respective field. He gave the example of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam to explain that we need to apply the theoretical knowledge to solve practical real life problems. He also shared that Punjab is facing ground water crisis and is slowly turning into a desert. Linking it to the need of sustainable development, he shared that Punjab has 2% area of India but consumes 15% of pesticides. If we do not opt for sectoral and natural farming, we will not be able to sustain agriculture in the long run.
Elocution on the topic “ Is it valid to spend on Space exploration in a Country like India” was won by Pranshu Nagpal while the first runners-up was Kirti. In Poster making the first prize was bagged by Gunjan while the second prize was won by Balpreet.
The celebrations were attended by Dr. Sudhir Sharma, Head Department of Electricl Engineering, Mr. Gaurav Kumar Dhuria, Head Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Neeru Malhotra, Head Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Dr. Dinesh Kumar, Head Department of Information Technology and faculty and staff of the institution.
