KMV Organizes an Extension Lecture on Postcolonial Theory

Jalandhar 27 April (Jaswinder Azad)- Kanya Maha Vidyalaya-the Autonomous and Heritage Institution, Jalandhar’s P.G. Dept. of English under the aegis of English Literary Society organised an Extension Lecture. The resource person was Prof. (Dr.) Aneel Raina from the Dept. of English and Cultural Studies, Panjab University Chandigarh. The topic of his discourse was Postcolonial theory. Principal Prof (Dr) Atima Sharma Dwivedi extended floral felicitations to the resource person. Prof. Raina said that literature should make the students curious, enable them to ask questions and to think differently. Dr Raina elaborated upon the nuances of the term postcolonial, its political overtones and the range of countries falling under its ambit from the Western academic perspective.  He also discussed the objective of the postcolonial literature -- to find a voice and an identity by reclaiming one’s cultural past, eroding the colonialist ideology. Throwing light on  terms like ‘hegemony’, ‘marginality’, ‘orientalism’, ‘hybridity’, ‘mimicry’, ‘identity’ and ‘subaltern’, the erudite scholar pointed out that most postcolonial theorists live in the West and hence their perspective is influenced by Western ideas and referred to some prominent postcolonial thinkers and their works like Frantz Fanon (The Wretched of the Earth), Aeine Cesaire (Return to My Native Land, 1969), Edward said (Orientalism,1978 & Culture and Imperialism,1993),  Homi Bhabha (Nation and Narration, 1990) and Bill Ashcroft (The Empire Writes Back, 1989). The discourse was followed by an interactive session where the queries of the students were answered by the resource person. Principal Prof (Dr) Atima Sharma Dwivedi congratulated Mrs Seema Jain, Head, P G Dept of English and the faculty members for providing such a great learning opportunity to the students to broaden their mental horizons. All members of the PG Dept. of English were present on the occasion.
