New Delhi 1 August (RK Handa)- National highways across the country need to be secured,particularly during night hours. Recent sensational crime near Bulandshahr should be an awakening call for authorities.Lonely and deserted stretches of roads turn out to be crime zones during night. This problem can be addressed to a great extent if police patrolling is increased and more police posts are added on the network of highways. Travellers during night time must have felt ,how fearful it is to pass through dark,lonely, unmanned stretches of highways during night time.Passenger buses are accompanied by armed guards but there is no security for cars and trucks.Police should identify gangs of criminals operating in settlements along highways.An another possible way out could be to make village bodies responsible for safety of stretches of highways in their vicinity.During post partition days when border boundaries were not established, several States had made it mandatory for village Panchayats to depute able -bodied men above the age of 18 along the border to keep a vigil.National highways are lifeline of the country, but life of people moving on these roads after sunset should also be secured.
