Jalandhar 25 March (Jaswinder Azad)- An awareness drive to raise consciousness regarding the fast disappearing house sparrows and other urban birds was carried out by Environment Club of HMV, Jalandhar. Principal Dr. (Mrs.) Ajay Sareen expressed her concern that our house sparrows are fast vanishing from our environment and the need of the hour is to take immediate and effective steps to safeguard the life of these birds who have been close companion of humans for numerous centuries. Students of various classes of the college were taken for a nature proximity walk and were also shown documentary films to feel close to sparrows and understand their importance. Mrs. Jyoti Kaul, Incharge of Environment Club initiated the celebrations marking world sparrow day and told students that the birds also feel like us and we need to ensure their safety. Dr. Anjana Bhatia, Secretary, Environment Club laid stress on the causes of disappearance of sparrows and told students that the most important causes for disappearance of sparrows is increasing radiations from mobile towers, loss of their habitat and lack of grain outside our houses. She said that we must put water and grain for sparrows on our roof tops and outside our houses. Students of environment club prepared sparrow splashes to be placed in the campus. Bird houses for sparrows were also planned. Dean Academics, Mrs. Meenakshi Sayal also urged the students to grow more plants to reinstste the habitat of house sparrows.
