Jalandhar 1 April (Jaswinder Azad)- Centre for Historical Studies, Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar organised an Extension Lecture on the theme of “The Magnanimous Maharaja Ranjit Singh”. Dr. Radha Sharma, Professor, Department of History, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amristar was the guest speaker on the occasion. Dr. Suman Chopra, Director, Centre for Historical Studies extended a warm welcome to the guests. The Lecture was presided over by Dr.G.S. Samra, Principal, Lyallpur Khalsa College.
An eminent scholar in the field of nineteenth century Punjab history, Dr. Sharma gave a holistic perspective of the personality of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. While discussing in detail the different aspects of the reign of Maharaja, she said that practical efficiency and religious catholicity were the two strong pillars of his government. Objective of the Maharaja was to build an egalitarian society. Merit remained sole criteria for the recruitment in the administration. He employed a number of foreign officials in the army to train his soldiers. His army was the second best in Asia after the British. In the last, she discussed about the Maharaja’s secular orientation towards religious matters. Maharaja magnanimously donated Dharamarth grants to temples, mosques, and gurdwaras. In the end, Dr. Suman Chopra proposed the vote of thanks. The stage was managed by Dr. Karanbir Singh. Dr. Amandeep Kaur, Dr. Kulnaz Kaur Judge, Prof. R.P. Sandeep Kumar Bhagat, faculty members from various other departments and a large number of students attended the lecture.
