Jalandhar 28 April (Bureau)- Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar, further enhanced its ever growing reputation as the premier educational institution of the country when the University Grants Commission (UGC) acknowledged and awarded the institution with the prestigious ‘Potential for Excellence’ Award. An impressive function was held in the college wherein Sardarni Balbir Kaur President College Governing Council and college Principal Dr. G.S. Samra congratulated the college staff for putting their best efforts for such achievements.
Speaking on the occasion Prof. Manohar Singh explained the procedure for the awarding of this title which is given on the basis of academic performances, merit positions lists, national-international conferences, sports and other achievements. This award is also accompanied by a grant of Rs. 1.5 Cr. The College also holds the proud distinction of being re-accredited with 'A' grade with a high 3-74 CGPA score on 4 point scale by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
College Staff Secretary Dr. Rashpal Sandhu, attributed this achievement to the unwavering guidance and support of Sardarni Balbir Kaur President Governing Council and Principal Dr. G.S. Samra. The College has already won the prestigious Sardar Teja Singh Samundari Overall General Championship Sports Trophy of Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar for the record 14th time with a total of 22440 points. Similarly, the college has claimed the Zonal Youth Festival Winners trophy and the runners up spot in the Inter Zonal Youth Festival of GNDU Amritsar. The college has also represented Guru Nanak Dev University in the National level Competitions and contributed heavily in the resulting triumph.
During the last three years the college has performed exceptionally well in the Universtity exams with an impressive total of 394 merit positions consisting of 60 first postions, 56 second and 55 third ranks in the University, in addition to the 43 distinctions. The same evolution was also noted in the field of research as well wherein the college staff members were actively involved in the successful carry out of 325 research papers and 30 books as well. The college has established four research centres: Centre for the Shri Guru Granth Sahib Studies, Centre for Historical Studies, Punjab Centre for Migration Studies and S. Balbir Singh Centre for Science to promote research in these areas. Various major and minor research projects (in accordance with the UGC) are also undergoing in the college including Dr. Gurpreet Singh’s relevant project on the impact of Famine on various crops. The Department of Biotechnology is funded by DBT under Star College Scheme and its Head, Dr. Arun Dev Sharma is also working on various groundbreaking research projects along with his research scholar Ms. Gurmeen. Many departments of the college are carrying out their bi-annually research journals most notably being the Departments of Commerce, Computer Science & IT and Biotechnology. The college also provides annual Michael Sehgal scholarship worth Rs 10 Lakh for the purpose of higher education to one of its most deserving students.
