Discourse on "Evolution of Bioinformatics and its Applications in Medicine"

Jalandhar 7 October (Jaswinder Azad)- A DBT sponsored discourse on "Evolution of Bioinformatics and its applications in Medicine" was organized by Department of Bioinformatics of Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar. In her interactive session, the resource person, Dr. Neeta D. Sinnappah-Kang, Seniior Scientist & Head, Betty Cowan Research and Innovation Centre, Christian medical College, Ludhiana gave an idea on how the field of Bioinformatics have evolved to solver complex and challenging problems in Biology. While addressing different queries by the students, she emphasized on significant role being played by Bioinformatics in analyzing Big Data in Medicine. She also makes students aware of the increasing scope of Bioinformatics in industry as well as academia in India and abroad. Followed by her talk, the Guest of Honour Dr. Manjeet Singh Kang, Adjunct Faculty, Kansas State University, USA and the former Vice Chancellor, Punjab Agricultural University inspired students by his motivational talk full of practical tips to succeed in the field of Science. Principal, Prof. Dr. Mrs. Ajay Sareen presented formal welcome and appreciated the efforts made by Mr. Harpreet Singh, Mrs. Purnima, Ms. Nikita for organizing this interactive session with scientists of International fame.  Students from various science streams including B.Sc.(Med./N.M./Bio-Tech.),  M.Sc.(Botany/Bio-Info.) attended this discourse. An interclass poster presentation competition "Application of Bioinformatics in Medical Sciences" was also organized. Deepanjali and Deepanjali of B.Sc. Biotechnology Sem-V won the first prize, Navneet and Pooja Kumari of B.Sc. Sem-III won second prize and Suman and Nancy of B.Sc. Sem-V won third prize. Stage was conducted by Dr. Anjana Bhatia while Poster presentation was judged by Dr. Meena Sharma, Mrs. Jyoti Kaul, Dr. Seema Marwaha. Dean Academics Mrs. Meenakshi Syal presented vote of thanks.
