New Delhi, 5 October (Bureau)- DSGMC general secretary Manjinder Sirsa must publicly disclose his full criminal record, the trials and police complaints he's been named in following the conviction and imprisonment of his father for fraud, Shiromani Akali Dal Delhi chief Paramjit Singh Sarna demanded Wednesday.
Sirsa's father, Jasbir Singh, has been jailed by Chandigarh's district and sessions court for forging property documents apparently to grab the estate belonging to someone else.
Sirsa, an advisor of Punjab's deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, has had a dramatic rise financially, mostly on the back of suspect land and property dealings, S. Sarna noted.
"Jasbir Singh is not a stray case of criminality in that family. There have been numerous accusations of criminal trespass, fraud, intimidation and high-handedness against Sirsa himself. Many of the charges have been suppressed either by force or by political influence," the SADD president told a news conference. He wondered why Sirsa, Badal Jr and DSGMC chief Manjit Singh GK have all sunk into silence after the court judgment.
"Their stoic silence is deafening," remarked S. Sarna. "They are the same people who would otherwise hold street protests at the drop of a hat. Why is GK now not holding any demonstration when the father of his muscleman has been convicted of fraud?"
The SADD leader observed that the verdict has far-reaching ramifications on the conduct of the top office-bearers of the Sikh religious office. "It goes without saying, Sirsa is known more for his ill-gotten wealth, power abuse and as a political broker for the Badals than as a man with spiritual leanings and religious wisdom. He was awarded the role of DSGMC general secretary for espousing everything that's forbidden in our faith," regretted S. Sarna.
He demanded the Badals order Sirsa to publicly list all the cases and complaints he has been named in and ask him to step down as DSGMC general secretary and member till he is acquitted. "The DSGMC is sacrosanct. It can no longer be allowed to be run by people with links to criminal mafias," the SADD president said.
Jasbir Singh's conviction, he observed, has vindicated widespread public perception about chronic corruption and deep-rooted criminality in the Badal group. The SADD chief described the court ruling as a clarion call for the people of Punjab and Sikhs of Delhi to unseat the Badals from Chandigarh and from religious power in the DSGMC in the two elections due early next year.
S. Sarna has also been vociferously demanding the Badal family ask their men like Sirsa and Manjit Singh GK to make mortgage disclosures over their loan application for Rs 40 crore.
"These shady people have mortgaged our religious resources as security to secure new bank loans. This bankruptcy of our religious management is unprecedented in Sikh history. There's every reason to believe a massive embezzlement of Gurdwara funds contributed to it," S. Sarna said.
