Jalandhar 23 March (Jaswinder Azad)- The Science Faculty of Kanya Maha Vidyalaya – the Heritage Institution, Jalandhar organized a National Seminar on Recent Trends in Science and Technology under DBT Star College Scheme. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Dr. Gurcharan Kaur (Prof. and Head, Dept. of Biotechnology, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar). The Principal of KMV, Prof. Atima Sharma Dwivedi extended floral greetings to the Chief Guest. Madam Principal said that such events enlighten us with various recent trends in Science and Technology which are quite imperative and we are fortunate to have an organization like DBT which helps in organizing such events. Dr. Updesh Kaur, Coordinator DBT welcomed all the speakers and delegates on behalf of Science faculty. The inaugural address was delivered by Dr. Gurcharan Kaur. She talked about recent advances in medical biotechnology, its importance, advances of medical biotechnology like monoclonal antibodies, bioprocessing, stem cell research, tissue engineering etc.. She also talked about various life style disease, their effects, consequences and remedies. The session was further proceeded by Dr. Sachin Suresh Suraeshe, Sr. Scientist, Division of Entomology, Biological Control Lab ICAR-IARI (PUSA), New Delhi. He gave in overview in Biopesticides and discussed entomopathogenic nematodes, NPV (Nucleo Polyhedrosis virus) and various parsitoids which are being used at IARI as bispesticides and also discussed the approved use of biopesticides in India. The next presentation was given by Dr. Manoj Sharma, (Prof., Head Dept. of Chemistry GNDU, Amritsar) on Journey of Organic Chemistry. He discussed the history of organic chemistry and various by chance discoveries like dye, Petroleum that contributes to organic chemistry. He also discussed recent advances in organic chemistry like Green Chemistry, Supramolecular chemistry, essymetric dynthesis, organeatalysis. After this presentation, Dr. Arvind C Ranade (Vigyan Prasar, Dept. of Science & Tech.) interacted with the students on the topic “Recent Advances and Development in Astronomy and Astrophysics”. The students enthusiastically participated in interaction. At the end of the session, Dr. Saroj Arora (Prof., Dept. of Botanical and Environmental Sciences, GNDU) talked on the importance of herbal products. Students enthusiastically participated in the workshop on herbal products. Dr. Arora showed various herbal products made by them in their lab like rose water, cinnamon scrub, tooth powder and lemon pickle. The formal vote of thanks was extended by Dr. Neetu Chopra.
