Jalandhar 4 April (Jaswinder Azad)- The sociology department of Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya organized an extension lecture on the topic Social implications of rural and tribal displacement. The resource person was Dr. M.S. Gill, Retd. Professor of Sociology, GNDU Amritsar. Principal Prof. Dr. (Mrs.) Ajay Sareen welcomed the guest with a bouquet of flowers. Dr. M.S. Gill discussed about rural displacement and resettlement act 2007. He said that according to Indian Govt., this act includes the owner, tenants and non-workers, whose land is forcibly occupied by the state, are termed as displaced persons. They are different from refugees. He said that displacement is largely due to development activities particularly dams and industrial activities. It leads to mental trauma, degrade the social status of women. In nutshell, displacement is a traumatic process. Head of Sociology department Mrs. Geetika Mahajan thanked the resource person for sharing his valuable views with the students. This lecture was attended by approx. 150 students of sociology department.
