Jalandhar 23 May (Jaswinder Azad)- Under the able guidance of Principal Prof. Dr. (Mrs.) Ajay Sareen, the Faculty Development Programme on ‘Recent Trends & Advancements in Research in the Field of Languages and Social Sciences’ in being conducted jointly by English, Hindi and Punjabi Departments at Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya. In the forenoon session on the third day of FDP, the speaker, Dr Asim Siddiqui, Professor in the Dept of English, AMU, Aligarh, was welcomed by Conveners Mrs. Kawaljit Kaur (HOD, Punjabi) and Mrs. Mamta (HOD, English). Dr Siddiqui delivered his lecture on ‘Some Aspects of English Language with Particular Reference to Academic Writing’. He explained different types of text keeping in mind different genres and sub-genres of academic writing like a report, argumentative writing, and a poem. He also put special emphasis on how to begin an impressive writing. As a potential writer, according to him, one must carry a toolbox with three-four levels and these tools involve vocabulary, grammar and elements of style. Dr. Siddiqui believed that there is a writer within a writer along with an editor; and it is writer within which comes first.
In the afternoon session, Dr. Kranti Pal from the Dept. of Modern Languages, AMU, Aligarh, talked about the extent and popularity of any language and how it becomes acceptable among various communities. In order to research in literature, religion and history, one must have full expertise in the language and culture of that community. He also highlighted the role and responsibilities of a serious researcher. On this occasion, Conveners Mrs. Kawaljit Kaur (HOD, Punjabi) and Mrs. Mamta (HOD, English), Mrs. Kranti Wadhawa, Mrs. Archana Kapoor, Mrs. Ramnita Saini Sharda, Mrs. Kuljit Kaur, Mrs. Veena Arora, Dr. Jyoti Gogia (HOD, Hindi) were also present.
