Students explore System Biology and Developmental

  • Biology in Summer School at HMV
Jalandhar 5 July (Gurkirat Singh)- On 4th day of DBT sponsored summer school organized by faculty of Life Sciences at Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya, Dr. Prashanth from Birla Institute of Scientific Research, Jaipur was the resource person. He told students about computational and system biology. He informed students about various bioinformatics tools and their usage in protein interactions. A hands on training session on implementation of bioinformatics tool was also held. On this occasion Mr. Harpreet Singh accorded floral welcome to the guest. On 5th day of summer school, Prof. Rajesh Tandon, Deptt. of Botany, University of Delhi talked at length about “Learning from Ecosystem Service’. He elaborated on role of various birds, snails and honey bees in pollination. About 30% of our food depends on insect pollination. He reinforced that if there were no honey bees on this planet, then human population will vanish within three years.  He beautifully introduced the concept of xenogamy, autogamy and pollination syndrome by giving example of different plants. He also stressed on developing pollination friendly garden which will be helpful to conserve pollination and sustain ecosystem. Hands on training session was conducted by Dr. Yash Mangla, Delhi University, Delhi. In this session students performed various tests to check pollen viability, pollen sterility and fertility by using fluorescent microscope. Dr. Meena Sharma, Convener presented vote of thanks to resource person. Dr. Anjana Bhatia and Dr. Shveta Chauhan conducted the stage. Dr. Nitika, Ms. Ramandeep, Ms. Jaswinder, Ms. Harpreet Kaur and Ms. Avantika were also present
