Jalandhar 6 October (Gurkirat Singh)- Kanya Maha Vidyalaya-the Heritage Institution has reached pinnacle of glory by becoming the first and only women institution of Punjab affiliated to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar is bestowed Autonomous status by UGC-MHRD, Govt. of India under the dynamic leadership of Sh. Chander Mohan, President, Arya Shiksha Mandal. KMV is the only women institution of Punjab to be given this honour. Autonomous status is accorded only to promising institutions with a proven record of performance and credibility. KMV was visited by a high profile team of UGC in April’17 comprising erudite scholars and high Govt. officials for providing Autonomy to the college. The UGC visiting committee gave their high recommendation and the standing committee of UGC and VC, Guru Nanak Dev University have given their approval to award this status to KMV through their official order. Highlighting the importance of autonomous colleges, the UGC document on the profile of higher education in India clearly states, “The only safe and better way to improve the quality of education is to delink most of the colleges from the affiliating structure. Colleges with academic and operative freedom are doing better and have more credibility. The financial support to such colleges boosts the concept of autonomy”. It is a historic and momentous development of Kanya Maha Vidyalaya which will steer the institution to greater heights and new achievements in future.

Highlights of Autonomy :
- Degrees to students will be provided by Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar as before.
- Autonomy is for Academic freedom and quality enhancement of excellence in education for the benefit of students.
- Exams will be conducted by the institution. This will result in fair assessment of students and speedy results without delay.
- Syllabus of existing courses will be revised and changed as per the requirements and demands of 21st century.
- New courses including job-oriented programs and subject combinations will be introduced and collaborative degrees with foreign universities will be started.
- Autonomy process is student-centric and they are the main stakeholders and force behind it.
- International Programs at KMV will gain more strength and collaborative degrees and partnerships will be enhanced.
- KMV will have its Board of Directors under the leadership of Sh. Chander Mohan and involvement of a Govt. nominee, a UGC nominee and a GNDU nominee in it.
- Academic Council of KMV and Boards of Study of all faculties will be constituted.
- Grants of Govt. will remain the same. UGC grants are further enhanced and more aids are given to Autonomous colleges.
- More Federal Involvement : a Govt. nominee, a university nominee and a UGC nominee will sit in the Board of Directors.
- Reforms in all areas of Academics and Exams will be introduced for the benefit of students. For example, internal assessment will be introduced for final exams which will ensure student performance all through the year.
- Internationally accepted credit system will be introduced, to enable students easy global employability.
- New improved systems and reforms will ensure and enable us to impart better education to our students and service to society and nation. Our institution will continue to lead excellence in education.
