Youth unaware of freedom struggle and its symbols–Survey

Jalandhar 16 August (Jaswinder Azad)- The youth in Jalandhar is not very knowledgeable about  the history of our freedom struggle  and its various symbols. This fact came out in a survey conducted by the students of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, GNDU Regional Campus, at Ladhewali here. This survey was conducted on the 70th Independence day among about 100 youth from various parts of the city. 73 % of them did not even know which year of independence are we celebrating. Almost the same percentage 77%  were not aware of the date of the adoption of Indian Constitution. However, when they were asked about the Iron Man of India, 63 % of the respondents could name him as Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel. When asked questions about the National Flag, National Song and National Emblem, most of the youth answered correctly.   But for some questions like the designer of the National Flag or where the highest Flag was hoisted, those who knew the answers were only 20% and 18% respectively. Though the youth could name at least 5 freedom fighters, they did not know the origin of the name of our nation, India. The responsibility of creating awareness among the youth about their national history rests on many factors like media and education system.  Internet is mostly used for purposes other than education for most of the younger generation.  So, remedial measures need to be taken to acquaint the youth about their glorious past.
