Jalandhar 1 September (Jaswinder Azad)- Olympian, Harmanpreet Singh, student of DAV College has been invited and honoured by the college and he presented his t-shirt 'Jersey No. 13' to college as a token of love. Every year, 29th of august is celebrated as 'National Sports Day' in India. The reason behind celebrating 29th of august as 'National Sports Day' is the birth date of 'Hockey Wizard' Major Dhyanchand. Major Dhyanchand was born on 29th August, 1905 in Allahabad. His childhood name was Dhyan Singh. The name Chand was given to him by his colleagues as every night he waited for moon and practiced in its light. Under his captaincy, India won gold medals in the years 1928,1932 and 1936 in Olympics. That is why, he was given the title of 'Hockey Wizard'.
Just like him, Harmanpreet Singh is also a rising star of hockey. Harmanpreet Singh's hometown is gurdaspur and he is a student of DAV College, Jalandhar who got his training from Surjeet Hockey Stadium. Harmanpreet represented India by playing hockey in Olympics, 2016 in which Indian team remained till quarterfinals. His talent perceives through his latest match against Pakistan in 8th Junior Men's Asia Cup held in Quantum, Malaysia in which he scored 4 goals for Indian team. In this match, India defeated Pakistan by 6-2. Along with this, he scored 15 goals in the whole tournament. Along with India, China, Pakistan, Japan, Oman, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Korea also participated in this tournament.
On the occassion of 'National Sports Day', Harmanpreet Singh presented his t-shirt that he worn in Olympics to the College. He said that he is proud to be a student of DAV College, Jalandhar and that is why he is presenting his t-shirt to the College as a memory. Except Harmanpreet, 5 other players of Indian Junior Hockey team, Harjeet Singh (Captain), Varun kumar, Mandeep Singh, Gurjant Singh and Vikramjeet Singh got coaching under Coach Avtar Singh in Surjeet Hockey Stadium. While expressing his views for Harmanpreet, Coach Avtar Singh said that in the past 2 years he observed affirmative development in Harmanpreet and he is really happy for his achievements.
Dr. SK Arora ( Principal DAV College, Jalandhar) congratulated the students on their achievement. He said that along with the whole nation, they have also made the college proud. Along with this, the HOD of Physical education department and the head of sports department, Dr. Manu Sood said that along with Harmanpreet Singh, Varun kumar, Vikramjeet Singh and Gurjant Singh are also the students of DAV College, Jalandhar. He said that the whole nation is proud of them and the college will entirely facilitate these students.
