Jalandhar 13 August (Jaswinder Azad)- Kanya Maha Vidyalaya- The Heritage Institution, Jalandhar where every cultural festival is celebrated with traditional fervor celebrated Teej which is a major part of mansoon celebrations in northern India. It is a festival specially meant for girls. Dr. Sushma Chawla (Secretary Managing Committee) was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Students were dressed in rich and bright-punjabi folk costumes. The festival began with the welcome of Principal Prof. Atima Sharma and the chief guest Dr. Sushma Chawla who sat on the swings. It was followed by cultural glimpses in the form of Giddha and Punjabi folk songs sung during the mansoon reason. A Competition titled ‘Sohini Sunakhi Mutiyar’ was also organized. Traditional sweets like Kheer, Pura and Jalebi were sold on stalls alongwith the all time favourite Punjabi snacks like Pakora. There were other various stalls selling Bangles, Parande, Punjabi Jutti, Heena and other cosmetic items. On the occasion the best costume award was given to Ms. Pradeep Kaur, the best gait to Ms. Jagbir Kaur, Ms. Simrandeep Kaur won the title Sohni Sunakhi Mutiyar and Simarjit Kaur won the title ‘Tiyan di Rani’. While awarding the prizes the chief guest Dr. Sushma Chawla said that Kanya Maha Vidyalaya’s cultural values were rich and deep- seated. She further observed that a nation could become progressive if it empowered its women and remained connected to its rich cultural values. Addressing the students on the occasion Prof. Atima Sharma Dwivedi said that today’s girls were skilled and educated, they needed to take good moral and ethical values to their in-laws home, in place of money & gifts as dowry. She inspired the girls to be connected to their culture and traditions.
