Jalandhar 29 August (Jaswinder Azad)- It took 15 years for the judgment to be delivered in the case of rape against self styled godman Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim as a special CBI court delivered a sentence of 20 years and a fine of Rs. 30 lakhs on Monday. Following the development, the students of Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of Kamla Nehru College for Women, Phagwara conducted a survey on this burning issue. The faculty members and students of the college were asked about their views on this verdict.
Presenting her views in very strong words, College Principal Dr. Kiran Walia raised a salute to the judiciary for delivering justice, the media for keeping people constantly updated and especially those girls who showed unparalleled courage and raised their voice against this cruelty. However, said that the quantum of punishment is very less when compared to the agony that the girls had to face and said that such people should be hanged.
Advising people to not follow anybody blindly, Head of English Department Ms. Gurjit Kaur said that such dera should not be formed at all and the government should levy heavy taxes on the deras that do exist and keep an eye on their work. Ms. Jyoti from Hindi department appreciated the decision of the court, but added that the Haryana Government betrayed the trust of the people and did not perform their duty properly. The students of the college also felt that the decision of the court is apt and justified. Madhavi from M. Com felt that finally justice has been done to the sadhvis while Jagpreet from B. Sc. Non Medical expressed that such deras should be banned.
